The Baudelaires do not have the tools to cost-free the Quagmires, so they ascend the shaft by turning the parachute into a scorching-air balloon. They struggle to alert Esmé of Olaf's plan, but learn also late that she is in cahoots with him and that they are planning to smuggle the Quagmires from the city. Esmé pushes them down the elevator
